Tips to Improve Digestion

Many of us have likely struggled with a digestive concern at one point or another – some of us experiencing more chronic digestive health ailments. This could include bloating, excess gas, constipation, loose stools, etc. Maybe you have run to the health food store for a “detox kit” or a laxative that has provided some relief, but likely was not long lasting. When it comes to digestion, it is important to really examine the foundations of health, as those often go overlooked yet can have a profound impact. Here are some simple ways to improve digestion:
Move Daily Daily exercise, including walking, is helpful for improving bowel health and can help with constipation and bloating by stimulating the digestive system. Aim for a minimum of a 30-minute walk daily.
Sleep A lot of important restorative functions happen while we sleep, including the processes in which optimize digestion and bowel movements. Going to sleep around 10:00pm – 11:00pm and getting adequate sleep is way to begin improving gastrointestinal health.
Hydration One of the most important factors of improving digestion is ensuring that you are drinking an optimal amount of water daily. Water helps to provide moisture to the digestive tract and can assist with reducing bloating and easing constipation. Your hydration needs may vary depending on your lifestyle factors and climate.
Fibre Gradually increasing fibre intake can be helpful for overall gastrointestinal health and can assist with improving bloating, constipation, gas, and loose stools. Eating a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and complex carbohydrates are a great way to improve digestion and bowel movements.
